@ CIFOR-ICRAF we are workign on sustinable energy in humanitariant context applyign a systems approach which starts by sustinable biomass production through growing and managign trees, processing and enhancing efficiency in consumption as well as alternatives.

Isn't that a rather limited definition of 'productive'?

I agree with Andrew Seal. Using only a purely economic definition takes away the emphasis on the importance of providing energy for other community needs and priorities.

Hi all, it would be great to hear more about how the program considers the ethics of running a market based program with highly vulnerable (and low-income) communities?

46:20
Good point Ben. The cases in Kakuma and Bidi bidi are interesting cases where smart studies have been designed to ensure end users have purchasing power to buy the energy products (solar products and improved cooking solutions)

In simple terms, productive uses of Energy are those that increase income or productivity. They add value which is taxable if part of the formal economy. (based on GIZ, 2011). For more on PUE definition we published this paper: https://endev.info/moving-to-scalable-business-cases-in-productive-use-of-energy-endev-presents-practical-analysis/

53:13
We take into account social infrastructures (drinking water, Health, Education etc...) as part of specific activities.

53:32
Perhaps a term such as 'financially productive' might be helpful to distinguish this from other, broader, economic benefits?

55:22
Cleaner cooking sulutions should include how the fuel is produced and processed in addition to improving use/cooking appliaences.

56:12
Yes, it is part of our PUE internal tracking tool, as fuel / energy production.

56:28

Expanding cost effective RE systems to a population

01:03:39
Having an understanding from previous energy access before displacement - a topic which is a challenge to us - energy for cooking is clear to us, but why providing those types of services that weren't available before (and most of the host population does not even have)

01:04:08
what is the difference between PRNM for UNHCR and DTM for IOM?

Report on SDG 7 progress

01:04:31
We would use it to inform our project design and how to make sure the vulnerable parts of the displaced population are included, particularly ways of making market based solutions work for all

01:05:17
More info about the Modern Energy Cooking Services programme can be found here: https://mecs.org.uk/

01:07:33
We think, data should be gathered and be public also from host communities, so help to promotion the development of both communities at the same time

01:11:09
It is important to add an environmental screening to all energy interventions to avoid negative impacts, and, in many countries and for most donors, comply with laws and regulations. The results may be useful in justifying an investment (e.g., cost of fuel wood compared to solar-based electricity) and helps comply with the Do no harm concept.

good point Kelly!

01:12:52
A question that relates to yesterday's meeting on humanitarian clean energy contracts and innovative financing: Are dispatchable electrical storage assets treated as capacity assets for the purpose of UNHCR's ESCO contracts?

01:13:05
Funding challenge for clean cooking energy is enormous.

01:13:06
For greater sustainability go for certified, quality, efficient energy kits and appliances. https://verasol.org/

01:13:14
Thank you for the excellent presentations.

USAID POWER AFRICA and partners under the OFDA/ BHA have Implemented multiple solar electrification projects helping the internally displaced. It would be great if we could also learn from this and build awareness.

Dear Abdullahi and Rosario: DTM is collecting data on regular basis in displacement sites, e.g. camps, collective centers, host communities included to understand the needs of affected populations.
